I've used ChatGPT as one of my primary AI tools since its launch — first as a free user, then as a ChatGPT Plus subscriber. Over that time I've watched it evolve from an impressive novelty into a genuinely indispensable work tool. This review reflects years of daily use, not a quick spin through the demo. What Is ChatGPT?

ChatGPT is an AI assistant developed by OpenAI, first released in November 2022. It became the fastest-growing consumer application in history, reaching 100 million users in just two months. In 2026, it remains the most widely used AI assistant in the world — a position it has maintained through consistent capability improvements and a growing ecosystem of integrations.

At its core, ChatGPT is a conversational AI that can write, code, analyze, research, summarize, translate, and reason through complex problems. What began as a single chat interface has expanded into a platform with multiple AI models, image generation, voice conversation, memory, custom GPTs, and web browsing — making it the most feature-complete AI assistant available.

The question in 2026 isn't whether ChatGPT is good — it clearly is. The question is whether it's still the best, given serious competition from Claude, Gemini, and others. The answer is nuanced, and this review will give you the full picture.

For a direct comparison with its main rivals, see our ChatGPT vs Claude vs Gemini comparison.

ChatGPT Models in 2026

OpenAI offers several model tiers with meaningfully different capabilities:

ModelAccessBest For
GPT-4o miniFreeEveryday tasks, quick answers
GPT-4oPlus/TeamGeneral use, coding, writing
o3Plus/ProComplex reasoning, math, science
o4-miniPlusFast reasoning tasks

GPT-4o: The Everyday Workhorse

GPT-4o is OpenAI's flagship general-purpose model and the one most ChatGPT Plus users interact with daily. It handles writing, coding, analysis, and conversation exceptionally well, with low latency and consistent output quality.

The multimodal capabilities are genuinely useful: upload an image and ask questions about it, paste in a chart and ask for analysis, share a screenshot of an error and get debugging help. These aren't gimmick features — they change how you interact with the tool in ways that compound over time.

GPT-4o's writing quality is strong, though not quite at Claude's level for long-form prose. Where it excels is structured output — clear explanations, well-organized summaries, and technically accurate content that requires minimal fact-checking.

o3: The Reasoning Model

OpenAI's o-series models take a different approach to problem-solving. Rather than generating a response immediately, o3 "thinks" through problems step by step before answering — a process called chain-of-thought reasoning that's visible to the user.

The results on complex tasks are impressive. o3 handles multi-step math problems, logical puzzles, and complex coding challenges more reliably than GPT-4o. For researchers, engineers, and anyone working through genuinely hard problems, the reasoning models represent a qualitative improvement over the standard approach.

The tradeoff is speed — o3 takes noticeably longer to respond than GPT-4o. For quick tasks, the wait isn't worth it. For hard problems where accuracy matters, it often is.

Key Features

Web Browsing

ChatGPT with web browsing enabled can search the internet and incorporate current information into responses. This directly addresses one of the traditional weaknesses of AI assistants — knowledge cutoffs that leave them unable to answer questions about recent events, current prices, or new developments.

The browsing implementation is solid. ChatGPT cites its sources, and the integration between search results and conversational responses feels natural. For research tasks that require current information, this feature is essential.

Compared to Perplexity AI (which is purpose-built for web search), ChatGPT's browsing is more conversational but less rigorously cited. For research requiring academic-quality sourcing, Perplexity remains the better choice. For general current-events questions woven into a broader conversation, ChatGPT's implementation is more seamless.

DALL-E 3 Image Generation

ChatGPT Plus users can generate images using DALL-E 3 directly in the chat interface. The integration is the smoothest of any AI image generation experience — describe what you want in natural language, get an image, ask for changes in conversational follow-ups.

DALL-E 3 quality is strong for realistic photography styles and artistic illustrations. It's not Midjourney for creative, stylized art — but for practical use cases like blog graphics, product mockups, and presentation visuals, it consistently delivers usable results without the learning curve of Midjourney's prompt engineering.

Memory

ChatGPT's memory feature allows it to remember information across conversations — your name, your job, your preferences, ongoing projects. Over time, ChatGPT builds a profile that makes interactions progressively more personalized and efficient.

This is one of ChatGPT's genuine differentiators. Claude and Gemini don't have comparable persistent memory. After months of use, ChatGPT knows that you're working on a specific project, prefers certain writing styles, and has particular constraints to consider — making interactions substantively better than a fresh conversation every time.

Memory can be reviewed and edited at any time, addressing privacy concerns about what the model retains.

Custom GPTs

The GPT Store allows users to create or access custom versions of ChatGPT tuned for specific tasks: a coding assistant configured for your tech stack, a writing assistant with your brand voice, a research tool focused on your industry.

OpenAI and third-party developers have published thousands of custom GPTs covering everything from legal research to recipe generation to academic writing assistance. The quality varies widely, but the best custom GPTs are genuinely better than the general model for their specific tasks.

Voice Mode

Advanced Voice Mode allows real-time voice conversation with ChatGPT, with emotional expression and natural interruption handling. The voice quality and conversational naturalness are noticeably better than basic text-to-speech implementations.

For users who prefer talking to typing, or who want hands-free AI assistance while doing other things, Voice Mode is a meaningful feature. It's the closest current approximation of the conversational AI from science fiction.

Free vs Plus vs Pro

FeatureFreePlus ($20/month)Pro ($200/month)
GPT-4oLimitedUnlimitedUnlimited
o3NoYes (limited)Unlimited
Image generationNoYesYes
Web browsingYesYesYes
MemoryYesYesYes
Custom GPTsYesYesYes
Advanced VoiceNoYesYes

The free tier is genuinely useful — more capable than many paid alternatives from a few years ago. GPT-4o mini handles a wide range of everyday tasks competently, and the included web browsing and memory make it a serious tool.

Plus at $20/month is the right tier for most professionals. Access to full GPT-4o, reasoning models, and image generation covers virtually all use cases.

Pro at $200/month is for power users who need unlimited access to the most powerful reasoning models and priority infrastructure. Most users don't need it.

ChatGPT Strengths

Ecosystem and integrations. ChatGPT connects with more third-party services than any competitor. The plugin ecosystem, API integrations, and custom GPT store create compounding value that standalone AI assistants can't match.

Feature breadth. No other AI assistant combines web search, image generation, voice conversation, memory, and custom models in a single interface as seamlessly as ChatGPT.

Reliability at scale. OpenAI's infrastructure handles the world's largest AI user base. Downtime is rare and response times are fast, which matters when you depend on the tool daily.

Coding assistance. GPT-4o is an exceptional coding assistant, particularly for Python, JavaScript, and SQL. The reasoning models push coding capability further for complex architectural problems.

ChatGPT Weaknesses

Writing quality. Claude consistently produces better long-form prose. ChatGPT's writing is good, but tends toward a formulaic quality — bullet-heavy, over-structured — that requires more editing to sound natural.

No memory persistence across API. The memory feature works in the chat interface but not the API, which limits its usefulness for developers building ChatGPT-powered applications.

Context window. GPT-4o's 128K token context window is smaller than Claude's 200K. For very long documents and large codebases, this creates real limitations.

Cost of Pro tier. At $200/month, the Pro tier is expensive compared to Claude Pro and Gemini Advanced at $20/month. The additional capability of the reasoning models justifies this for specific use cases, but it's a significant commitment.

Who Should Use ChatGPT?

ChatGPT is the best choice for:

  • Users who want the broadest feature set in one tool (browsing + images + voice + memory)
  • Developers building AI-powered applications who need reliable API access
  • Anyone who values persistent memory across sessions
  • Teams needing integrations with enterprise software
  • Users doing significant coding work who want the best coding assistant available

Consider alternatives if:

  • Long-form writing quality is your top priority — Claude wins here
  • You primarily need research with citations — Perplexity is better
  • You're embedded in the Google ecosystem — Gemini integrates more deeply
  • Budget is a constraint — the free tier is capable but limited compared to Claude's free offering

The Bottom Line

ChatGPT remains the most versatile AI assistant available in 2026. The combination of a capable free tier, strong paid tiers at reasonable prices, and an unmatched feature set keeps it at the top of the market despite intense competition.

It's not the best at any single thing — Claude writes better, Perplexity researches better, Midjourney generates better images. But no other tool does everything ChatGPT does in one place, and that breadth has real value for users who don't want to manage multiple AI subscriptions.

For most people, ChatGPT Plus at $20/month remains the best default choice. Try the free tier first, and upgrade if you find yourself hitting its limits regularly.
